HELMUT LANG FW 2001

I think this image is a perfect example of the brillance of Helmut Lang. If this image did not have a date accompanying it you would never know this look is from a runway show that was presented over ten years ago. It’s not that its a classic look, it was a forward and modern look that still holds both of those atributes today without looking the slightest bit dated. The fit and menswear look on a woman with strong sexy overtones to it blow away that current interpretations of this idea. Not only is this on trend for so much of womenswear now, but it is 11 years predating it. Thank god for Helmut Lang.

Golden Age of Menswear

internetfame:

The golden age of menswear for me was 2001-2008

This was when all the greats were at the top of their game.
Helmut Lang, Yohji, Margiela, Jun, Miyashita, Ann D, Hedi, Dries, Damir Doma, Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Junya.

The beginnings and peak for brands like W)Taps, Visvim, Supreme, Bathing Ape, NDG, Cloak.

Will there be a second golden age?

This to me is true, the early 2000’s was absolutely the golden age of menswear the edge was there. Youth and adult ideas/aesthetics were juxtaposed in such a way that was so new, so aggressive, yet at times so subtle. This era of designers is of an unparalleled stature, there was more talent and vision in this group than what is out there today. Fashion (especially menswear) tends to look backward before forward for inspiration but to this lot, they took the past, their inspirations, and created something so forcibly new and exciting. The ability to look back and reinterpret and design something new and fresh not reproduce ideas and visions from another has been to an extent lost. As I’ve mentioned before on here menswear has fractured into the avant, the traditional, and the street. Hardly do those ideals ever cross paths in our current menswear climate yet those elements when combined became the foundation for that golden age to build upon.

Will this energy and talent combination come again? Who’s to say, but who can we point to in this current climate as leading the way?
